On Mentoring
Our goal is simple—to help all of our lab members achieve their true potential. We believe that science is a team sport and are dedicated to building a culture of caring and inclusiveness. We believe that the greatest legacy for any lab are the relationships forged, trainees mentored, and careers nurtured.
Mentorship and culture matter. They matter because science is hard. Most hypotheses are rejected. Most experiments fail. Effort and persistence, while necessary, do not guarantee progress. Understandably, it can be hard to not take these challenges and disappointments personally. We thoughtfully select projects that are appropriate for the level of training of each lab member. And we remind each other that even though experiments fail, scientists don’t. We are kind and respectful and supportive. And when—after much trial and error and head-scratching—success finally comes, we relish and celebrate that brilliant thrill of discovering something that, if we are lucky, has never been seen before. We live for those moments.
